International Master Program in Creative and Sustainable Architecture Studies

■ Background

The College of Design is the place where the individual creativity of a student can be nurtured in a framework that is humanistically, socially, artistically and environmentally responsible. We offer master program in the areas of creative and sustainable architecture studies which including environmental and urban design, building technology, design technology, history, theory and practice, and the visual design. In order to cultivate professionals with abilities of integrated design studies particularly in architecture, the program is mainly supported by an inter-department training of architecture and industrial design, which cut across the discipline groups are our devoted teaching, interdisciplinary training, and the remarkable faculty.

Prospective students to this international program are welcome to join us. This program is fully supported by all the faculty members, facilities of the college.

■ Program Overview

The international master program is designed specifically for preparing international students for opportunities of working in the local and global societies. Master of Science in Architecture Studies is offered. The program is conducted by a faculty body consisting of members with professional experience and outstanding records in teaching and research. All courses offered in this program are taught in English. Financial support includes tuition waiver, fellowship, and research assistantship are available. The program focuses on research methodology, design technology, architecture design, creative design forum, urban planning theory and practice, environmental planning and design, innovative design thinking, urban and cultural revitalization, architectural seminar on special topic, building technology, renewal and reuse, visual design and architecture.

The Master program provides flexible and pragmatic training to the students interested in a career in architecture design, urban and environmental design, and further study. The Master of Science in Architecture Studies is designated as a two-year program of advanced study in architecture. It is founded on research in architecture as a discipline and as a practice. We put emphasis on quality rather than on quantity, and inquiry into creativity, sustainability and contemporary problems of architectural design and practice in Taiwan, Asia and around the world. 

Students in the program are encouraged to take relevant courses in the program and other programs in the university.

■ Faculty

The College of Design currently offers comprehensive studies including Department of Industrial Design, Department of Architecture, Graduate Institute of Architecture and Urban Design, Undergraduate Program of Creative Design, Graduate Institute of Innovation and Design, Graduate Institute of Interactive Media Design, Graduate Institute of Design. It offers three master programs, three undergraduate programs and one doctoral program. For promoting the capacity of research and the design teaching resources integrate effectively, the college establishes three research centers; they are Research Center for Sustainable Environment and Green Building, Taiwan Cultural Fine-works Design Teaching Resources Center and Center for Innovative Design & Knowledge Management.

The College currently has a network of related academic departments such as in Britain, America, Germany, Australia, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Mainland China and elsewhere with which it has established research links and joint training. The aim of all curricula in the College of Design is to develop and integrate the highly professional designer's attention and sensitivity in sustainability, ecology, planning, landscape, architecture, engineering, product, interior, innovation and consultation so as to keep abreast with the global trend.

On the basis of our distinguished records on integrated design in the college, the international master program boasts a faculty body. Under their guidance, students of the international program will receive a substantial training both in sustainable architecture design and cultivate a global competitiveness in the international society.

Our Full-time faculty all hired according to not only the qualification requirements established by the Ministry of Education, but also a great deal of design professional experience. In addition, we also have more than fifty part-time faculty members, all practicing professionals from the fields of architecture design, urban design, industrial design, interior design, and other design related professions around Taipei District. Contently, joint research and faculty exchanges programs are encouraged in order to extend domestic and international connections.

■ Curriculum

A carefully designed curriculum in Creative and Sustainable Architecture Studies is offered on a regular basis. The curriculum will be further enriched by additional courses selected from other graduate programs both in the College of Design and from other colleges of NTUT.
